ANTARC-SHIP project: Exploring Environmental Stewardship in the Context of Tourism and Science

ENP researchers, Machiel Lamers and Daniela Cajiao, have recently returned from their 6 week Antarctic expedition. The purpose of their fieldwork was to explore and assess Environmental Stewardship practices (i.e., the practices, technologies and management approaches we deploy to minimize our environmental footprint or to protect the environment) in the context of tourism, science, and logistical operations in Antarctica.

They were hosted by the Uruguayan and Spanish Polar Programs located at King George and Deception islands, part of the South Shetlands in the Antarctic Peninsula. They conducted interviews with researchers and logistical personnel at different research stations. They also performed participant observation methods at intensively used and visited sites. On their way back they were able to join a cruise vessel and support the expedition team in their activities while also providing a talk on Environmental Stewardship to tourists.

This research is part of the ANTARC-SHIP project, funded by NWO and implemented by ENP-WUR. The results of this project are expected to contribute to decision-making processes at the Antarctic Treaty System.
